1998 Centennial Palarong Pambansa, Bacolod

The 1998 Palarong Pambansa which celebrates 100 years of Philippines Independence was held in Bacolod. This event saw the emergence of many future national stars and future national coaches (then as athletes). This is a partial listing of results that i had saved way back in 1998 when i first got the internet, this was when I was starting out as an athlete in my early high school days and became a follower of Filipino Track stats. Surprisingly these results are no longer available on the internet and have survived several hard drive crashes and reformats unlike other documents I once had.

Please note back then the Palarong Pambansa had three divisions, Elementary, High School and College or Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.

.

Day 2

SEA Games Double 2001-2003 400m Gold Medalist Ernie Candelario

  • The meet started off well with Herminia Peranda breaking the 10K Womens Record beating Enate Sayrol. In the Pole Vault Anna Natad then 19 leapt 2.60m, which was a Filipino Junior Record at the time. Natad later went onto to jump 2.90m which was the senior record until it was broken by Marestella Torres.
  • In the Mens Javelin Edmund Ramos (a resident of the famous gate 7) is fourth, he later changed his event to 400 Hurdles.
  • The Long Jump Tertiary is interesting with Former National Team mainstay Raphie Pilaspilas winning in 7.19m, from his team mate Ernie Candelario 7.04m (who would later become a sea games champion in the 400m twice). Roland Canta who would become a member of the training pool was fourth in that event.
  • Mayven De Oro, the relative of Maika De Oro won the Elem Shotput.
  • Future SEA Games Bronze Medalist Jerro Perrater broke the Palaro Record in the Mens Hammer Throw.

.

Day 4

The 1998 Palarong Pambansa saw the emergence and rise of Marestella Torres

  • Penaranda added the 5k womens record to the 10k record she had previously set.
  • A 17 year old Marestella Torres won the High School Long Jump in 5.54m this was the palaro record until it was broken in 2002 by Maricel Sibog. Former training pool sprinter Leslie Mercado was second.  Sibog who was then in her first year of high school leapt 4.92m for 5th place.
  • National Throws Coach Nixon Mas won the Mens Shotput in a Palaro Record of 13.72m well ahead of his opponents, his Davao team mate Airforce man Jordan Oberez  was 5th in 1m56 in a very closely fought mens 800m. Mas also won the discus in 39.10m, with Gerro Perrater also competing.
  • It was a famous trifecta with all three records in elementary-secondary-tertiary boys 100m records broken at this meet.
  • In the Boys 100m it was probably the fastest elementary field assembled with Nasser Tacongcong of ARMM running 11.4 seconds a mark which still stands unchallenged until this day. Though alot of them are probably overaged the first four in that said event broke 12 seconds.
  • Ronald Calaunan clocked 10.7s (10.69 hand), according to these results. However the Palaro record is listed as 10.9? does this mean that the 10.7 was the recording on the first stop watch and the other times made it round off to 10.9. 10.9 has been ran by Calaunan (98), De Ocampo (06) and Noval (11) which makes it a joint record. However if Calaunan 10.7 is the official mark that means he is the sole owner.  Ronnie Marfill who later became a member of the 4x400m medal relay team at SEA Games was 7th in that said event in 11.3.
  • Marfill won the boys 400m in 51.1 with Hypersports co-founder Vicente Sy third. Marfills future relay mate Ernie Candelario won the mens 400m in (49.1)
  • Benson Penarubia clocked 10.6s which is the Palaro Record, however careful research shows that Mario Tabuano ran 10.5 or 10.6 at earlier editions of this meet in what is the equivalent of the Tertiary division. Therefore he should atleast be the joint holder in this event.  Top sprinter Orlando Erece who once dated Nancy Navalta was second in 10.7 and UAAP Champion Nathaniel Moral was third in 11.0, Airforce man Elmer Billones who had a pb of 10.6ht was fourth in 11.0, with University of Mindanao Coach Harrish Natag fifth in 11.0.
  • In the Secondary Girls 800m, future sea games representatives Rosel Espinas (later UE) Nhee Ann Bharcena (later DLSU) finished 4th and 5th. But went onto run better performances than the girls that beat them.
  • Jonah Genilza who later joined DLSU and was a member of the training pool won the Secondary Girls 100m in 12.1s, ahead of Irene Mujar of BRAA who was the holder of the Elementary Record in 100m  the previous year and finish 5th. Genilza time was faster than the winner of the Tertiary Girls Marietta Rapadas 12.3s.

.

Day 5

  • Genilza also set a Palaro record of 58.1 in the 400m. This was the record until 2011 when Jennyrose Rosales broke it with 57.4.
  • Rene Herrera and Julius Sermona future olympian/sea games gold medalist 4-5 times in Steeples and sea games medalist finished first and third in the Mens 5k.
  • Canta won the Mens Triple Jump from Raphie Pilaspilas who placed third.
  • In elementary girls 100m Hurdles future FEU UAAP Record Holder Zara Dela Virgo won the gold.  While in the secondary division Amelia Fransisco who represented the Philippines at the Asian Juniors the next year won from Julie Rose Forbes. Forbes who later represented FEU would go onto set the JR Record in the 100m Hurdles at 14.61 in 2002.  Also impressive in the seniors was winner Sheena Atilano who later went onto break the national record of Elma Muros.  Pole Vaulter Natad picked up the bronze.  Mary Grace Melgar who finished 5th in this event later went on to win the silver in the 400m and 400m Hurdles at SEA Games.
  • Mercidita ‘Bunso’ Manipol (now Fetalvero) who later went on to set the 5K National Record was second in the 1500m.

.
Day 6

Olympian Henry Dagmil

  • Manipol also finished second in the 3k run again behind Marites Acomyo.
  • Maris Cottoner who later would set the secondary record won the elementary high jump.
  • Again there was a trifecta of records in the 200m in all 3 divisions. Tacongcong running 23.7s in elementary which still stands, Calauan ran 22.2s beating Ronnie Marfill, this record was tied by Daniel Noval in 2011. Penarubia set a 21.7 record in the mens division, Erece 22.0, and Ernie Candelario 22.1.
  • Charmei Cabale set a record in the elementary girls 200m of 26.94, which was later broken by Maureen Emily Schrivjers.  Genilza ran a quick 25.3.
  • Jerry Baldon of Davao was second in the boys triple jump.
  • Boys Secondary Long Jump was won by future national record holder, olympian and sea games champion x2 Henry Dagmil who leapt 6.86m, ahead of Baldon.
  • Forbes won the 400m High School Hurdles, Forbes later went on to finish 5th at the Asian Juniors in 2002 and set the still standing Philippine Junior Record.
  • Former SEA Games athlete Domingo Manata was second in the 400m Hurdles mens.
  • Future 3ks stand out Rene Herrera won the Mens 3ks.
  • Future High Jump Record Holder and now national coach Sean Guevarra won the silver in the pole vault.

The 2012 Palarong Pambansa returned to Lingayen, Pangasinan province after seventeen years. The Palarong Pambansa was first held at Lingayen in 1959 when it was then the Bureau of Public Schools Interscholastic Athletics Association (BPISAA).

.

Day One: Fuentes takes home more than just the long jump gold

Fuentes Soars to a new Palarong Pambansa Record

The highlight of Day 1 came from Julian Reem Fuentes of Region 2. Fuentes who came in second to Western Visayas (WV) Gerald Layumas last year in an epic 6.86 to 6.85 lock out (Layumas went on to win the UAAP title this year for DLSU). Fuentes this year not only satisfied his hunger for the gold but dished out a new Palaro record with 7.26m. Erasing the ten year old secondary boys 7.15m record of Paolo Martinez set at the 2002 Palaro in Bicol. So dominant was Fuentes in the event the silver was a very distant 6.45m.

Fuentes jump was the 2nd best jump of 2012 at the time behind Dagmil’s opening jump of 7.43m at the Laguna time trials. Fuentes leap is the 4th best ever performance by a junior behind Joebert Delicano (7.55), Teodoro Nonato (7.33), and Marayag (7.31). Fuentes will have this year and next to go after the national junior mark which has stood for thirteen years.

.

Cabanyog takes the shotput record but not a personal best

Richie Joy Cabanyog of WV went into the Palaro with a best throw of 14.15m from regional palaro. Last years silver medalist this time hurled the shot-put 13.90m although not his best throw it was still enough to erase the record of his team mate Efraem Gesulgon who won last year in 13.68m.

Cabanyog Palaro Record was not even his personal best throw.

Meanwhile in the Javelin Evalyn Palabrica exchanged her silver medal last year for the gold in the girls javelin with a 39.61m throw for the WV ahead of Rinalyn Apos 36.90m (Region 13).

.

Day Two: New Century Dash Hopefuls

LINGAYEN, PANGASINAN- With defending champion and outright pre-race favourite Romnick Nor( CMRAA) out due to a hamstring injury the 100m will be a head-to-head match. Joining them are Central Luzon’s (CLRAA) Jomar Ubtoman who clocked 11.0 just edging NCR Rodquem Maullom also 11.0 and team mate Terenz Tengol (CLRAA) 11.1 in their time trials respectively. With the absence of Nor, this will be the a closely contested final in the games history with first to last running 11.0 and 11.2. These athletes are the ones to be watched on the day three of Athletics competition of Palarong Pambansa 2012 this 9-May.

Meanwhile in the distaff side, Maureen Schrivjers of NCR will try to joust her rivals in the century dash and possibly add to the elementary title she won FOUR years ago. Mau for the past three years finished well outside of the medals despite going in as the favourite on times . Team mate Perlitia M. Ynot taking the second slot with a time of 12.6, and Glaiza Salcedo clocking 12.7 in their trials. Also barging into the finals was Eloisa Luzon (12.7) who won the silver medal last year and Batang Pinoy Champion Mary Anthony Diesto (12.8) (With reports from Airnel T. Abarra)

New heroes in century dash and half mile shine in day 3 Palaro

Mau (tall sprinter in middle yellow) wins century dash for girls.

LINGAYEN, PANGASINAN- Maureen Emily Schrivjers of NCR demons to rest, after trying three years to win the Palaro. Mau’s last success in this event came four years ago when she won the elementary title. Mau had gone in as the favourite for the last 2 Palaro’s but the pressure had caused her to finish outside the medals back then. This year she finally went victorious as she capture the gold in the 100m secondary distaff race at the afternoon session in day three of Palarong Pambansa 2012 here at Narcisio Ramos Sports and Civic Center. The lass from the capital region register a 12.5 win jousting NMRAA’s Eloiza Luzon who clocked only a fraction of a second at 12.6 settling for silver while Schrivjers’ confidant, Perlita Ynot Jra settled for the bronze podium with a clock of 12.7.

Although Maureen’s time was not able to erase the Palaro Record in the century dash for secondary girls still held by Nancy Navalta since 1994, it was always more about the win rather than the time which finally delivered in her final year of high school.

.

.

Meanwhile in the elementary girls, Joycie Beramio of WVRAA captured the gold with a time of 13.1 seconds. Her teammate Berna Luz Talaron went next to her taking a 13.1 second finish. Joining for the bronze slot is Josephine Kately Pano (CAVRAA) with a time of 13.5 Seconds. The 12.8 Palaro Record of Irene Mojar (BRAA) in 1997 remained untarnished by this year’s champion.

A record jointly held by three athletes in the Boys Secondary 100m Dash in 10.9 became safe for anoIther year with pre-race favourite Romnick Nor injured but back for his final year next year. Three holders in this event are CAVRAA Ronald Calaunan 1998, Emmanuel De Ocampo 2006, and Daniel Noval of CVRAA 2010.

In the 100m sprint in boys secondary level, Jonas Etuille of CVRAA captured the first laurel with a clock of 11.1. Jomar Ubtohan of CLRAA settled for second place clocking 11.1 (0.9) and colleague Terenz Carlo Tongol from CLRAA as well secured a 11.2 second clock finish respectively. NCRAA got consecutive medals in the elementary boys side as Felix Libo-on garnered a 12.1 gold finish and teammate Emmanuel Gutierrez securing the second spot with a clock of 12.2 seconds. In third place is CAVRAA’s Mark Urbina with a 12.5-second sprint.

Half-mile run (800m) closed the running events for day 3 is the 2:18.8 run of WVRAA’s Angelica de Josef which shattered the Elementary 800m Palaro Record set by Joneza Mie Sustituedo (WVRAA) last year who registered a time of 2:21.48. NMRAA’s Jie Anne Calis went to second place with a time of 2:22.1 and MIMAROPA’s Cheska Guintos clocked 2:27.2 respectively. In the secondary girls, Lovielyn Pamatian of WVRAA captured gold with a time 2:18.7. NCRAA’s Trishia Martinez tipped the finish line with a clock of 2:20.8. Third place was got by DAVRAA’s Mae Barit who registered 2:21.6 time.

Salvador Garin’s 800m Palaro Record remained untouched this year as NMRAA’s Gerwen Mamba clocked 2:00.2 for first place which is still short to the 1:55.9 time of the STCAA standout . Reymark Dela Cruz of WVRAA goes for a silver run with a time of 2:00.5 and STCAA’s Michael Abanador registered 2:00.6 for the bronze finish.

In the field events, BRAA’s John Roel Sariols marked a 10.06m throw in Elementary boys shot put. Next to him were Remier Sugui of Region I (9.76) and Jummy Cabalbag of CAVRAA (9.50). Settling for silver and bronze were Jersell Cabatino of CVRAA (1.83) and Alvin Caasi of Region I (1.83).

Shot put

Like the Discus the national record has remained untouched in this event set by Consuela Salibis-Lacusong 37 years ago in Cebu City.

Veteran Heptathlete Narcisca Atienza, topped the High Jump, Heptathlon and Shot put ranking lists this  year. Atienza (12.09m) was the only shot putter over 12 and 11 meters this year. The Shot put is still an event the Philippines is weak at with no medal chance at SEA Games for a long time.  Atienza was followed by five juniors Sombilla, Tan, Terpstra ,  De Oro, and Isada who have thrown over 10 meters.

Sombilla and Tan finished first and second at the UAAP. Terpstra won the Junior title at the National Games and De Oro the Palaro Pambansa title.

This year eight athletes threw over 10m, compared to five last year. The standard for next years ranking increased from 9.50m to 9.80m.

33 year-old Rosie (‘arr’) Villarito continued her dominance in this event with a seasons best of 48.84m.  Villarito who was second at the Last SEA Games, is the 2009 SEA Games Champion.

Emerging junior Evalyn Palabrica was the most prominent Javelin Thrower this season however improving her best throw to 41.55m and then breaking Villarito Junior Record (44.54m) which had stood since 1998 with a 44.73m to win the UAAP and then representing the Philippines for the first time at the ASEAN Uni Games finished behind the SEA Games Gold Medalist from Indonesia with a throw of 45.43m again breaking her own Junior Record.

SEA Games silver medalist in the Heptathlon Narcisca Atienza was third (43.68m) this year on the rankings .

The emergence however of several promising juniors such as 18 year-olds Palabrica, and 2011 Palaro Champion Stephanie Cimatu (40.18m) and Fil-Heritage athlete Cerah Moren (38.42m) who is 13, showed that their is likely continuity of success in this event.

The Criteria for the Javelin this year was 36m, eight athletes exceeded this mark compared to five last year. The standard for 2013 rankings stays at 36.00m.

Maika De Oro one of the future stars of Philippine Athletics.

Maika De Oro one of the future stars of Philippine Athletics.

For 47 years Big ‘Joe’ de la Vina has held the national junior and 41 years the senior record in this event. The last athlete to win a medal at the SEA Games was now national coach Roselyn Hamero.  The only athlete to throw over 40 meters since then has been Maikahn De Oro who registered 40.25m at the 2011 Palaro in Dapitan. The 18-year old De Oro from Bacolod leads the charge again this time with 38.96m to win the Junior title at Dumaguete.

19 year-old Twinkle Masilang (DLSU) is the UAAP Champion with 37.11m #9 all time lists. As the Discus and Shot put are events which athletes peak at a later age it is difficult with the retirement of collegiate athletes such as Judelyn Capistrano (RTU) and Micah Sibayan (Ateneo) to maintain continuity in these events.

Ira Mae Hernandez (UE) also improved her best throw to 36.88m.The Standard for this event was 30m but this is now increasing to 32.37m in 2013.  In 2011 only four athletes exceeded 32m, this year it was ten.

Loralie Sermona

Another veteran dominated this event which is the case in throwing events where athletes can peak into the 30+ age range. 31 year old SEA Games Bronze Medalist Loralie Amahit Sermona improved her national record to 50.23m. Read about it here. She was well clear of UAAP Champion Kenneth Grace Ferrera (FEU) whose 37.79m fell slightly short of the UAAP Record of Annabell Sioson.

The standard for Hammer was 27m in 2012, however it will be raised to 28m in 2013. Eight athletes threw over 29m in 2012 compared to six in 2011.

3K to 5K Ranking List

mo farah rene herrera olympic games london

Herrera makes friends with Mo Farah after despite finishing last he set a new PB in the 5k.

The top three spaces as usual were taken by three Veterans of the sport. Olympian 33 year old Rene Herrera topped the list with his 5k effort at the Olympic Games 14:44.11. The two 34 year olds  Eduardo Buenavista who holds the national record in the 10k, won the 5k at the National Games in 15:11.59,  close behind him was another SEA Games veteran Julius Sermona in 15:13.05.

*NB. Correction reported before Herrera had qualified for sea games however his time of 14:44.11 is just outside the 14.41.30 standard.

New Kids on the block Rafael Poliquit (FEU) a had significant improvement reducing his best time from 15:35.4 last year to 15:25.1 en route to winning the University Games in Bacolod. His run for change team mate Richard Salano reduced his time significantly as well from 15:42 to 15:29.5. It was however there team mate Christopher Ulboc that won the UAAP in the much highly anticipated match up taking his seasons best from 15:37.79 to 15:31

These two will surely challenge defending UAAP Champion and training pol athlete Christopher Ulboc (FEU) for his 5k title in December. Ulboc finished third in the National Games in 15:37.79 to 15.31.12. His performance just tucked him in behind Anthony Nerza of Brokenshire College for seventh place on the ranking lists.

Ulboc will have to dig deep to erase his four year old best time and run below 14:41.30 to qualify for the SEA Games.

The Criteria cut off for the 5k (15m45)  in 2012 and will remain that for 2013.

.

Question for our poll is this is the UAAP 15:21.6 record of Ben Alejandrino (UST) set in 2006 in danger?

.

As per the poll Poliquit actually was closer to the 10k Record of Alejandrino .04s off it during the uaap, but his time at the ASEAN Uni Games was 4s below that mark.

It seems that the three veterans will hold on for at least this SEA Games while the University Age athletes need a bit more time to catch up. However when the next SEA Games in 2015 rolls around Herrera will be 36 and Buenavista and Sermona 37.

34 Year Old Julius Sermona leads the field at the PNG in Dumaguete.

Julius Sermona the National 10K Champion leads the list with 31:09.44 he has made the SEA Games Bronze standard of 31:22. Buenavista the National 10K Record Holder is second on the list. As in the 5k the old guard is still leading the new generation of runners. Four of the eleven listed are UAAP athletes with the remainder provincial or AFP athletes. As eleven names now appear on the list the criteria for next years list is reduced to 34m40 at this stage this of course could come down even further with new names on the list.

Closing however was Rafael Poliquit whose time was 14 seconds below the standing UAAP Record of Ben Alejandrino, unfortunately at the UAAP he was .04s away from it. But in the ASEAN Uni Games he captured the bronze in Laos.

The Criteria cut off for the 10k (35m00) however this for 2013 will be reduced to 34 minutes.

Nalus sores into 3.00m+ club

Nash Nalus says hello to a 2.95m National Junior Record in the Womens Pole Vault which she has now erased again . Nalus of UP was the athlete of the week in week 3 and week 5. In Week 5 she got 23 of the 28 votes. (Photo Credits: Macy Tirador)

The highlight of the second day of the University Games was 18 year old Natasha Nalus (UP) breaking her own National Junior record (2.95m set 18.08.12 during the weekly relays) and joining the 3.00m club.  The leap tied here with SEA Games Long Jump Record Holder Marestella Torres, and former UAAP Standouts  Nariza Rubio and Jesber Hualde who occupy the sixth to ninth places on the All Time lists.

It leads into a potentially exciting challenge for the National Junior Championship at the end of May with Fil-Heritage athlete Alyana Nicolas the same age as Nalus already clearing 3.20m this year. Albeit Alyana did not have a Philippine passport at that time so until that is obtained is not eligible for representation or the Philippine Record. Riezel Buenaventura has already surpassed the SEA Games standard of 3.90m. So it is upto Nalus and Nicolas to push each other to get the other seat on the plane to the SEA Games in Myanmar at the end of next year.

Coming in second was Nalus team mate former junior record holder Katrina Baron (2.90m) who is on the recovery from injury and equalled her season best of 2.80m.

Meanwhile in the Mens Pole Vault Adel Valdecanas got the better this time on count back against his long time rival National Junior Record Holder EJ Obiena after losing on count back the last time they competed a few weeks ago during the weekly relays. Again they both registered 4.20m.

Nalus, Baron, and Valdecanas are coached by Policeman and UP Assistant coach Mike Pelaez.

Cid Defends both titles

After qualifying fastest in the 400m with 49.2 easily, Cid ran down the fast starting Daniel Noval of CSB who won the 100 meter title the other day to defend his 200m title from last year albeit it was a little slower than the 21.7 he registered at Capiz. He also ran a seasons best of 53.5 to comfortably defend his title (it was just a little off the 53.1 record he had established at the UAAP in 2011). Cid recorded 48.8 secs in the final to improve on his third place finish in this event last year just outside the meet record of Christopher Demata (RTU).

Also seeing double was Cids school mate from FEU Josie Malacad, Malacad edged out 100m winner Schrijvers, in the 200m in a new personal best of 25.5 and then tidied up her title in the Womens 400m Hurdles in 1:03.1, Malacad also was very comfortable qualifying easiest fastest in the 400m with 58.5.

Malacad then sped away to easily win the 400m title in a time of 57.5. About .6s slower than the 57.04 she registered in Vietnam in June.

5K Favourites for UAAP

UAAP Champion Carmen Dalyn ran a new personal best in the Womens 5k in 19:03.3.  Beating her best time of 19:03.55 she ran at the UAAP.

Meanwhile Rafael Poliquit (FEU) knocked nearly 6 secs off his personal best in the 5k, he had recorded 15:31.0 during the weekly relays. His time of 15:25.1 now puts him ahead in the rankings of  his Run 4 Change team mates Richard Salano (UST) 15:29.5 and Christopher Ulboc 15:37.79 (pb of 15:24). And less than 4 secs away from breaking the UAAP Record of Ben Alejandrino set in 2006. It will be an exciting race in December with one of the three above breaking the record.

Day 1-3 Selected Results (only significant performances good enough to be Ranked Listed)

*note all performances hand timed rounded up and no wind gauge present, performances suffered due to heavy rain.

*Some incorrect performances now fixed

University Games Part 2: Event Reviews including Videos

Results and Photos (Day 1 and 2)

Womens 100m Heats and Finals

It was 17 year old 2012 Palaro Champion Mau Schrijvers who was the fastest in the heats in 12.4. The National Junior Silver medalist (12.68) in this event made it the third time to clock 12.4s which is also her personal best. 2008 Palaro Champion Ruffa Bargola (UP) was second fastest in 12.7 well off her personal best of 12.2 ran during the weekly relays. Unheralded Mae Angoring of RTU was the third fastest. Avegail Dizon fourth in the UAAP, 2011 National Junior Bronze Medalist Jacogoy, 2009-2010 Palaro Champion Michelle Loterte (UST) also made the final.

.

All eight runners lined up in the final but only the first six times were recorded in the results. It was Bargola of UP (black) who was fastest out from the blocks over the acceleration phase. The tall Schrivjers (white) and Dizon (yellow) took command during the top end phase of the race, with Mau having the best maintenance phase. Maureen Schrivjers added her second major title to her Palaro Crown with 12.5 albeit it was a bit slower than the final due to probably a wet track. Ruffa Bargola of UP who had qualified second ran the same time to get the silver her first medal in a while. Dizon improved over a tenth to snatch the bronze away from Mae Angoring who couldn’t cope with the rainy conditions and finished sixth. By the looks of the video it seems like Bargola was lucky to claim the silver as a photo finish would have seen Dizon clearly in front. The rest of the field was well out of it at least a body lengths behind third place. So probably not right the .1s difference between Bargola and Dizon.

.

Mens 100m Heats and Finals

According to Daniel Noval, their where three heats. Anfernee Lopena ran a a seasons best of 10.7ht to win his heat, while Noval won his heat in 10.7ht also. Lopena the 2011 Palaro 400m Champion from Bohol transferred to CSB from Holy Name University in Cebu after that school decided to axe the track and field team due to budget cuts. Lopena has had some very good runs over the shorter distances during the weekly relay. His team mate Noval on the other hand is a 2 time Palaro and 2 time NCAA Champion in the 100m. Also qualifying was NCAA JR Record Holder Jasper Tanhueco as third fastest, 2011 National Junior 200/400m Champion Noli Torres of Dasma also made the Final.

Only the first five athletes had times recorded in a damp final. Daniel Noval who obviously had kept something in reserve running the identical time of 10.62 ht, Noval led the race from start to finish pulling away in the maintenance phase of the race.. Lopena was a little slower this time in 10.9 and Jasper Tanhueco was third in 11 flat. It was gold and silver for Mighty Cebu. From the video it looks like Tanhueco leaning backwards and dipping early during the maintenance phase, enabled Lopena to pip him for the silver.

Womens 200m Final

At 120m it looked like Schrijvers (white) was destined for the sprint double. She was 5m clear of the field. However a strong surge saw Josie Malacad (yellow) run her down in the last 40m of the race.

.

Mens 200m Final

This was only ever a two man race. Noval (white) came off the bend the fastest with probably a little bit of a lead on Cid. However Cid who was bobbing his head tilted side to side over whelmed the little guy in a neck to neck battle all the way to the finish line.

.

Womens 400m Heats

National 400m Hurdles Champion Josie Malacad qualified easily fastest to the final of the Womens 400m. Malacad who was the only athlete to break 1m00.0 in the Heats recorded her personal best of 57.04et to take silver at the South Vietnam Open. The graceful striding Malacad took the womens 400m looking very comfortable. Perhaps a sign the 56.78 UAAP Record set by Ana Leah Hugo in 1997 could be gone next month. The runner of RTU was second in 59.7 and everyone else was 1m00+.

.

400M Mens Heats and Finals

Jesson Rami Cid was the fastest easily of the heat qualifiers. Cid the third fastest 400m man this year, will be lining up in the Decathlon and 4x400m next month in Thailand. Also qualifying to the final was UAAP Silver medalist *Bhardos and ‘Actor’ Jerico Ejercito.

The Final was an easy win for Cid who came off the bend 5 meters ahead and pulled further away from the field. Cid won in 48.8 just outside the games record of Christopher Demata last year. The next couple of runners across the line recorded 50s+

Womens 100m Hurdles

Michelle Loterte narrowly goes in as the favorite for the final. Loterte is only missing this title and the National Senior title from her resume. She was the Milo Little Olympic Champion 2008-2009, Palaro Champion 2010-2011 in this event, UAAP Champion 2012 and National Junior Champion. Her best time of 15.18et was established during the PNG in Dumaguete earlier this year. Loterte finished fourth in this final last year.

Her main opponent will be her team mate Banex2 who is the 2011 UAAP Champion with a personal best of 15.1 hand timed to win that title. This is the best form she has been in a for a while. Also in the final is Lea Casilihan who was the Junior silver medalist at the 2011 PNG in this event. Casilihan tied the time she had ran last Saturday during the weekly relay. Just outside her personal best again of 15.86 where she finished 5th in the UAAP Final. Last years winner Jaycel Casabuenca of Capiz who won the event last year in 15.4 did not compete.

In what could be described as one of the shocking defeats of the games under dog teenager Angela Eunice Balatibat the SCUAA Champion held off the countries best Hurdler Michelle Loterte in a scramble to the finish line ending her winning streak of over a year.

Balatibat seemed to cope better with the wet conditions improving half a second from her personal best to take the title. Loterte edged out hr team mate Viena Mae Banebane for silver and bronze. With the other three runners well out of the race. Everyone seemed to run half a second or more slower except for Balatibat in this race. It seemed as if Michelle who was leading the field by about half a bodies width stumbled on the wet track clearing the seventh hurdle and had to slow down before the eight hurdle to regain her ryhthm which saw Casilihan and Balatibat draw level. Casilihan was taken out of the three way race by the ninth hurdle after hitting it. Balaitbat was able to out sprint Michelle at the end and threw her hands in the air going over the line.

.

1500M Women Final

UAAP Champion Dalyn Carmen continued her fine form from the Weekly Relays a few days ago to again beat team mate and UAAP Silver Medalist Mary Ann Dela Cruz. This time the girls improved from 4.58 to 4.53 and 4.57 to 4.55. Carmen best time of 4.51.23 was established during the last UAAP. Unheralded Jelyn Duran took the calps of some better established juniors to take Bronze. Barit? (Bakit) the 2011 Palaro Champion and Vanessa De Valle the 2011 Palaro Silver medalist who have both broken 5 mins before in this event both failed to medal.

.

Mens 1500m Finals

Christopher Ulboc in his debut over 1500m this year ran the second fastest time of 2012 (4:00.9) . Ulboc best time of 3:58.6 was established during the weekly relays last year. ‘Considerable beef’ was added to the four names so far ranked for 2012 with the top three in this race adding themselves to that list.

.

WOMENS LONG JUMP FINAL

Not very good overall results in the Long Jump. A few years ago Dato-on won this event in 5.81m. Dolloso and Bermudo did much better in the Triple Jump.

MENS LONG JUMP FINAL

Some very impressive results in the Mens Long Jump. 2012 has been a good year now with nine male long jumpers leaping over 7.00m and lifting the standard of this event in the Philippines! wait until the ranking lists come out. Unheralded Mark Fabro was the surprise winner with a leap of 7.06m, coached by former National Decathlete Arnold Villarube. NCAA Bronze medalist Mark Harry Diones improved his best leap from 6.89 to 7.06m for silver. 18 year old Janry Ubas went from 6.85 to 7.01, and Melbert Diones who was fourth was just 3cm off his personal best.

*7.00m is now the new standard to making the Mens Ranking List in 2013.

WOMEN’S TRIPLE JUMP FINAL

Hometown Girl Felyn Dolloso (DLSU) returned home to win the Girls Triple Jump in 12.28m. Felyn who broke the National Junior Record during the 2012 PNG with a 12.55m leap, first came to prominence breaking the Palaro Record in 2010 with a 12.35m leap and also won the 2011 UAAP. She missed the 2012 UAAP due to academic reasons.

Also leaping above 12m was second place Joean Bermudo (FEU) the UAAP Champion this year whose 12.03m leap was just 2cm shy off her career best performance at the UAAP. The entire field was slightly off or a lot of their best performances considering the bad weather conditions where it rained heavily.

.

.

MENS TRIPLE JUMP FINAL

Also some great results in the Mens Triple Jump with JRU Brothers Melbert and Mark Diones taking gold and silver. Melbert improving his best from last year of 14.37 to 14.65 and Mark improving his best of 14.49 to 14.56 from last year are both trained by Jojo Posadas. Janry Ubas was third with 14.07. The 18 year old was well off the 14.64 jump he registered at the PNG.

.

WOMENS SHOTPUT FINAL

Four teenagers threw over 10m. Sombilla, 18 the UAAP Champion won the gold for UST just 9cm off her throw at the UAAP. Palaro Discus Record Holder Maika De Oro,18 of DLSU-Bacolod was secondwith 10.45m just 5cm off her personal best from last year and her first throw over 10m this year. Devy Isada who was second in the Juniors at PNG with 9.61, added more than half a meter to her best throw. Vanessa Baguwet (ADMU) 19, the UAAP Bronze medalist improved her best throw from 9.79 to 10.22m.

.

MENS SHOTPUT FINAL

Eduard Paul Paler who threw 13.12m last year to win the NCAA title added the Uni Games title to his resume with a seasons best of 12.90m. Palaro Record Holder Richee Cabanyog was well off his personal best by nearly two meters with the senior shot-put with 12.32m.

Womens 4×200 Final.

The irregular relay of 4x200m relay was won by FEU which featured National 400m Hurdles Champion Josie Malacad. UST was second and UP third. The results are snap shotted on an angle so are obscured off the page.

Shotput

Sunang

Sunang

SEA Games fourth place getter and National Record Holder Eleazer Sunang led the Shot put Rankings with 15.58m. Albeit his best is 16.35m.  The bar has really been raised now for SEA Games qualification with the bronze medal criteria now 17.08m.  Sunang is well ahead of the rest of the list.

The up comer is Richie Cabanyog of Bacolod and now at DLSU Taft who broke the one year old Palaro Record with a heave of 13.90, and set a personal best of 14.15m at the regional s with the 6kg shot. Cabanyog however using the senior shotput (7.26kg) could only manage a much smaller throw of 12.63m.

Meanwhile with the 6kg shotput UST Gary Santiago set a UAAP Record for Boys. The Criteria for the ranking list in shotput in 2013 remains the same as 2012 at 12.50m.

Discus

The Discus was led by Hammer Thrower Arneil Ferrera, followed closely by 39 year old national throws coach Nixon Mas. The Criteria for Discus remains at 37.00m for 2013.  The most impressive performance was by 16 year old Regan Contic of Baguio who is one to watch out for after throwing 41.17m during the weekly relays and winning the junior discus at the Philippine Nationals

Hammer Throw

Arniel Ferrera

4x SEA Games Champion Arniel Ferrera again easily led the ranking lists again. Four other athletes joined him on the list. Impressive newcomer to the list was Matt Crespo of Ateneo who shattered his own boys record in the Hammer Throw at the UAAP. The criteria remains 38m for inclusion in the ranking lists in 2013.

hammer-phi-2012.jpg

.

Javelin

Veteran Record Holder and former SEA Games Champion Danilo Fresnido clung onto the lead for another season. The 40 year old was closely followed by Gusti Pido who is now based in Taipei and Run4Changes UAAP Champion Kenny Gonzales who both improved on their personal best throws. The SEA Games standard for this event is 66.02m, and as a silver medalist last sea games this does not make Fresnido exempt from the SEA Games qualification. Also returning was former Junior Champion Allanloid Lumbao who finished fourth at the National Games. Impressive was newcomer Joshua Patulad who shattered the boys record at the UAAP in Javelin. The Criteria has been raised from 54m to 54.30m in 2013 for the rankings.

12 year old Joycie Beranio of Negros Occidental set a blistering fast 12.9 hand timed to easily win the Girls U/13 100m title from Briceline Soriano of Pangasinan by five meters. Beranio performance equalled the all-time record for a 12 year old Filipina as it tied with the 13.17 time posted by Fil-Heritage Kyla Richardson.

Bacolod City’s Mary Diesto defended her Batang Pinoy title in 14-15 girls winning in 12.7, with Leah Ann Joan Creer of Leyte second in 13.0 (ran 12.7 in heats). Creer won the 400m title in 1m00 and the 200m in 26.3 running the same time in the heats.

rocena-chua-hurdles

Barefoot Hurdler Rocena Chua was the surprise winner in the girls 15-16 Hurdles

Barefoot runner Joneza Mie Sustiedo the Palaro Champion won the 1500m in 5:01.11 in 14-15 girls. However another Palaro Champion didn’t have the same luck Jasmine Felix of Baguio was beaten by Rocena Chua 15.7 to 16.3 in her pet event. Chua later went on to claim the 400 Hurdles title.

Lanz Jeremy Halongong of Iloilo Province won the Shotput in 12.51m for 14-15 boys good enough for the rankings, CJ Tabongbuna of Iloilo ran a very fast time of a 12 year old with 11.50 in the heats, it was just outside the Age Grade Record Held by Nasser Tacongcong at 11.40 during the 1998 Palaro. Mindanao Leg Results

supplied by Coach Roselyn Hamero

It seemed all the events were field events and track events are missing.  None of the performances were good enough to Rank on the 2012 seasonal lists. Attached are most of the results not complete.

Batang Pinoy Mindanao 2012 Results

Northern Leg Report

(Oct 10-12) No performances on the first day where worthy of making the senior lists. However this did not mean their was not some good performances from some very young athletes. 11 year-old Briceline Soriano the younger sister of Former Palaro standout and 2010 National 100m Champion Rhemilyn Soriano won the Girls Long Jump, 100 and 200. Albeit the athletes here are 17 and under at Marikina Sports Park Sept 18-19. None of the results were really notable in terms of the Ranking List. The best result on Day 1 was 15-year old Jaime Mejia (UP) who won the 110 Hurdles in 15.6 over 3 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. (15.1 is the requirement to be entered on the national ranking list). Please watch this site for updates with future ranking lists.

*updated On Day 2 However 14 year old Celestina De Castro of Taguig easily topped the girls 200m heats in 26.1. A time which is good enough for the senior ranking lists which are being published today. However her time in the final was much slower at 27.9. She did also top the girls 100m in (13.2). This is a huge drop in performance between heats and finals. For now im happy to accept the time, but as the case is with most recorded hand times in sprint events i would be happy to see a similar performance next week at the weekly relays (held at Pasig) from Miss De Castro to help validate the accuracy and consistency of the hand timing if a similar hand times cannot be achieved the result maybe nullified from the rankings.
